EU Proposes Groundbreaking AI Regulation

BRUSSELS, BE – The European Parliament has proposed legislation establishing the world’s first set of rules governing the use of artificial intelligence (AI). The legislation, known as the European Union AI Act, seeks to ensure the adoption of human-centric and trustworthy AI while protecting health, safety, fundamental rights, democracy, the rule of law, and the environment from potentially harmful effects.

The move will establish global standards for AI technology across various applications, ranging from chatbots to surgical procedures. Once approved, the Act will apply to all developers and users of AI systems within the European Union. The level of regulation will depend on the risks associated with each application, ranging from minimal to “unacceptable.”

The act also mandates transparency requirements for AI systems, necessitating the disclosure of AI-generated content, identification of deep-fake images, and safeguards against the generation of illegal content. Detailed summaries of copyrighted data used for training AI systems must also be published.
