Meta Begins New Political Ad Policy for AI

Meta is starting a new political advertisement policy for agencies and organizations to state if their posts contain AI-generated content in the image or description. The process will require agencies to state whether their content content AI-generated material that contains alterations of real individuals or realistic-looking people/events. Meta’s moderation team will then verify these posts to ensure that they are accurate, using AI tools such as GANs to identify AI content. If a post is deemed to include AI content without being declared then it will be removed from the website and recurring violations will result in additional penalties.

Meta claims, that with the U.S. presidential election next year, they (and other social media platforms) are under intense scrutiny and want to avoid becoming a platform associated with deepfakes and false information (which was a major issue for Facebook during the 2016 election). With wars in Ukraine and Israel causing major controversy and politicians like Ron DeSantis already attempting to use AI-generated content, there is a real concern at Meta to keep their platform transparent and true during what is expected to be a tense election year in the United States.
