WhatsApp Introduces an AI-Generated Stickers Feature

Menlo Park, CA – WhatsApp, owned by Meta, is testing a new AI-generated stickers feature as reported by WABetaInfo on Monday. Select Android beta testers have noted the AI-powered feature allows users to generate stickers based on text descriptions.

Functionally resembling Midjourney or OpenAI’s DALL-E, this feature enables users to produce personalized images that serve as stickers for sharing with contacts or groups on WhatsApp.

The chosen generative AI model remains undisclosed, as WABetaInfo only states, “AI stickers are generated using a secure technology offered by Meta.”

The potential for problematic or misleading sticker content generated by such model raises concerns. While users can report inappropriate stickers, the protective measures on the AI model’s side are unclear.

WABetaInfo suggests that these AI-generated stickers are “easily recognizable,” hinting at the possibility of watermarks or indicators denoting their generative AI origin.

The feature is rolling out to more users over the coming weeks, according to WABetaInfo.
