Belgian Finance Minister Compares Crypto to Drugs

BRUSSELS, BE – In a scathing tweet Friday, Belgian Finance Minister Johan Van Overtveldt compared crypto to drugs, saying it has “no economic or social added value.” The remarks come as the ongoing banking crisis lingers.

Van Overveldt is the economic spokesman for 64 European Union lawmakers, the fifth-largest political group in the European Parliament’s Economic and Monetary Affairs Committee, and previously praised distributed ledger technology.

The European Parliament is set to vote on the Markets in Crypto Assets (MiCA) regulation next month. MiCA will provide a regulatory framework for crypto exchanges and digital wallet providers.
