The Next Crypto Documentary is Being Funded by Web3 Investors

Web3 has become a term that many use widely without fully understanding it. For many, it just means a web browser with NFTs and to others it’s a hoax to convince more people to invest in crypto.

However, as the blockchain industry continues to grow, we are witnessing web3 becoming a vehicle for a variety of new business models that were unimaginable before blockchains ever existed.

One proponent of these new concepts is Republic, a private investment firm leading the way in crypto-based assets. Their newest blockchain asset, called Film Financial Offering, is a unique take on cinema that aims to grow into a new source of funding for filmmakers.

I Am Not Satoshi

The first film being produced is a documentary called I Am Not Satoshi which is a documentary about the founder of bitcoin and the mystery that surrounds him or them. The film will go into detail about the creation of bitcoin and how Satoshi was able to create such a unique protocol that has led to the development of an entirely new industry.

Film Financing Offering

The new investment approach, which acts similarly to crowdfunding, is being labeled a Film Financial Offering (FFO) which gives the public the option to invest. If done successfully, this new trend of investing could give audiences more control over the types of films and content they want to see.

This has the potential to help independent filmmakers grow their audience organically without having to appeal to mainstream market genres and trends that they might not have an interest in. By employing web3 in filmmaking, there is a sense that more people will be able to watch films created through community interaction.

Republic

In order to make investments in the film, contributors will have to go through the Republic platform. Republic is currently providing several unique methods of investing in web3 and blockchain-based products lately including their collaboration with Artory/Winston’s fractionalization of Psalm 116: Dilexi, quoniam by Damien Hirst.

The platform hints at a larger trend in blockchain financing which shows that institutional investors are increasingly seeing the benefits of decentralization and how it can be used effectively to promote new products to a growing market of web3 individuals.

What’s the ROI?

According to Republic, there are three types of returns that investors can make on FFOs:

  1. Points -  A percentage of the film’s net profits that are paid out to the investor

  2. Equity - A stake in the film that allows revenue to be paid to the investor

  3. Debt - Payments made to the investor from the borrower with interest

Avalanche blockchain

Another interesting aspect is the FFO is being built out on the Avalanche Blockchain which has received less attention than some of the more popular blockchain networks such as Ethereum and Solana.

While Avalanche has an NFT marketplace called JoePegs, it has received much less traffic and activity than the more mainstream NFTs bought on Opensea and Magic Eden. With a weaker NFT catalog, pivoting to investment options with FFO could be the right decision that allows the Avalanche network to remain relevant in web3.
