EU, Japan Explore AI to Strengthen Semiconductor Industry

BRUSSELS, BE – The European Union is seeking closer collaboration with Japan in key technologies, particularly artificial intelligence (AI), to reduce its dependence on China. The EU seeks to strengthen its semiconductor industry and diversify its supply chains by collaborating with Japan.

EU Commissioner Thierry Breton is engaging in discussions with the Japanese government about AI and semiconductors as the key focus areas. Breton took to Twitter to say, “I will engage with [the] Japanese government [...] on how we can organize our digital space, including AI based on our shared value.”

The collaboration entails sharing expertise and resources with Japan, a prominent player in the global semiconductor supply chain. By expanding its cooperation with Japan, the EU wants to enhance its domestic semiconductor industry and reinforce the resilience of its supply chain.

In a bid to mitigate risks associated with over-reliance on China, the EU is adopting a distinct approach from the U.S.’ decoupling strategy by deepening existing alliances. The collaboration will drive technological advancements, establish global standards, and promote responsible trade practices.
